Why not just use Facebook?
We can still use Facebook, but I think this site creates a better form. And, many people don't like Facebook's privacy policy. The features of Facebook don't lend themselves to the features we can add here over time.
Do I have to give you my name, email, and address?
Not really, however we would appreciate it. You don't have to. Nothing is mandatory on this site.
It should be noted, that if you engage with the City of Pickering on any other platform, you usually have to reveal the same information we're optionally asking for on this site.
Can I still contact Abdullah on other channels?
Yes. However, other platforms are a much slower or noisier way to engage. This site helps us focus.
How does moderation work?
Only Abdullah can post, however anybody can comment, even anonymously.
The site uses a combination of sophisticated techniques such as auto-moderation techniques and temporary user-metadata to make that possible. Read the privacy policy for more information.
There is also a moderation log, which shows every time a message is removed by administrators or the automoderation.
Are these comments or messages?
Messages. The difference is subtle, however the distinction is important. When somebody replies to either a post or a comment, they can choose the recipient list. To start, there are only two recipient lists to choose from. Currently, there are only two lists, however more can be added. This turns messages into something more like an email, that can optionally be shared with the public.
Why are messages signed instead of attributed?
Social media platforms have taught us that our content should be attributed to us, individually. These platforms, are also dividing us, and doing unknowable things to our brain chemistry, as they optimize for ads. On this site, a message is attributed to all the people who "sign" the message. The author of the message is naturally the first signer. But after a second, and every additional person after, signs the message then the messages are displayed as if any of them could have been the original author. This allows the community to focus on the ideas and the content, rather than the person behind the message. It changes the incentives, and the privacy model, for discussions. We know this is different, but we think it's a feature that should start to shape this tool in a direction that makes it distinct from any other platform.
